Former Australian pro surfer Chris Davidson dies aged 45 after being punched outside pub

Former professional surfer Chris Davidson has died after he was punched in the face outside a pub north of Sydney.

Davidson fell and hit his head on the pavement after being punched, New South Wales Police said. The 45-year-old was unconscious and treated at the scene, before being transferred to Kempsey Hospital where he died.

A 42-year-old man has been arrested and charged with assault causing death. A statement from NSW Police said: "Following inquiries, a 42-year-old man was arrested at a home in South West Rocks about 12.40am and was taken to Kempsey Police Station.

"He was charged with assault causing death and refused bail to appear before Port Macquarie Bail Court today (Sunday 25 September 2022)." Davidson competed on the world professional surfing tour in 2010 and 2011, having first gained recognition in 1996 after he beat surfing legend Kelly Slater in consecutive heats at the Rip Curl Pro event as a teenager.

Slater paid tribute to Davidson on Instagram, writing: "Lost another soldier yesterday. #RIPChrisDavo. Had many a good battle with this guy. One of the most naturally talented surfers I ever knew."

Davidson's close friend and fellow surfer Nathan Hedge told Channel Nine's Today show: "[I was] fortunate to have an incredible life with Chris, and he was such an asset to myself and the surf community.

"Just tragic to lose Chris in such crappy circumstances. It's just tragic. I mean, nobody wins. It's just the worst thing ever.

"Not only has Chris' life been taken from us, the other person's life is shattered and ruined as well. Nothing positive can come out of this. It's the worst thing in the world.

"He lived such a large life. He was the most kind-hearted, charismatic incredible person. I'll miss surfing with Chris. I will miss him hanging out with our daughters."
