Glenn Whelan is set to join Fleetwood Town following his departure from Hearts.
The Irish Independent report that Whelan has agreed to join Fleetwood in a bid to keep his place in the Ireland squad ahead of March's Euro 2020 play-off with Slovakia.
Former Aston Villa midfielder Whelan controversially departed Hearts this month after an underwhelming six months north of the border.
Luton Town and Sunderland were both linked with Whelan, but he looks set to link up with former Manchester City teammate Joey Barton.
Barton invited Whelan to train with Fleetwood and have now offered him a deal until the end of the season.
Whilst it is not guaranteed, Whelan could well be registered in time to face Bristol Rovers on Saturday.
"We’re trying to get something done before the weekend, if that runs its natural course, we should have at least another player for Saturday’s game," Barton said.
Fleetwood make the trip to the Gas on Saturday for a clash between two sides challenging for the play-off places.
Rovers will be looking to turn their form around after failing to score a league goal in 2020.
