Former Arsenal transfer chief lifts lid on how close Jamie Vardy came to joining Gunners

Arsenal’s former transfer chief Dick Law has revealed just how close the club came to signing Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy.

The Gunners made a £20million move for Vardy in the summer of 2016, just after his goals had fired the Foxes to a remarkable Premier League title.

The transfer eventually fell through, with then-manager Arsene Wenger signing Lucas Perez from Deportivo La Coruna as his only significant attacking investment of the transfer window.

Vardy has continued banging in the goals for Leicester ever since, but in an interview with The Athletic, Law, who himself left the club in 2018, lifted the lid on his proposed Emirates switch.

“The deal with Leicester was done, the deal with the player was done,” Law said. “He came down to visit with his wife Rebekah, he sat on the couch in front of Arsene… and then he backed off.

“On his way back to Leicester I get a call from the player saying he wants to think about it overnight.

“At that point, you know it's bad news.”
