Former Arsenal striker opens up on regrets over his Gunners exit

Jay Bothroyd has admitted that he regrets how he left Arsenal 20 years ago.

The striker joined Coventry City in a £1million move in 2000, having never made a first team appearance for the Gunners.

That was despite having starred for Arsenal at youth level, after joining the club as a ten-year-old.

He was one of the standout players in the academy set-up and had trained with the first team, including the likes of Tony Adams, Martin Keown and Thierry Henry.

And after helping the Gunners win the FA Youth Cup, things seemed to be going smoothly for Bothroyd, as he recalled a conversation he had with Arsene Wenger in an interview with Wales Online.

"I remember he said, 'Next year I want to start involving you in some of the cup games'," Bothroyd said.

"I was training with the first-team squad every day almost, I was the first one to do that."

But it all changed for him following his reaction to being substituted in the Premier League Youth Cup final, with the teenager throwing his shirt at youth coach Don Howe.

There was no coming back from that and Bothroyd was subsequently sold to Coventry that summer, leaving the Gunners without making a first team appearance.

And he admits that is not a moment he wants to remember.

"I have regrets about throwing my shirt, but it's stuff I've got to live with," he said.

Bothroyd then spent three years at Coventry, before moving to Italy with Perugia and then returning to England, where he had spells with Charlton Athletic, Wolves, Cardiff City and Queens Park Rangers, among others.

Now 37, Bothroyd is currently out in Japan playing for J1 League side Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo.
