Former Arsenal striker offers Tottenham advice on how to defeat Matthijs de Ligt and Ajax

When it comes to beating Ajax, Robin van Persie knows a thing or two.

The Dutch giants have only lost five games all season - four in the Eredivisie and one in the Champions League.

The most galling of those five defeats came at the hands of van Persie's Feyenoord - a 6-2 hammering in which the former Arsenal and Manchester United striker scored twice.

Those six goals account for more than one fifth of the total Ajax have conceded in the Dutch top flight this season.

Ajax and Tottenham are the surprise packages in the Champions League this season, with the two teams going head-to-head in the semi-finals, with the first leg to take place at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next week, before the return a week later.

Frenkie de Jong has already earned himself a dream move to Barcelona this summer, while Matthijs de Ligt is expected to move on from the Amsterdam Arena to bigger and better things, too.

And van Persie has offered Spurs a few tips when it comes to taking on the Dutch side next week, although he does not expect the Lilywhites to be the ones travelling to Madrid for the final on June 1.

Speaking to Algemeen Dagblad, as per VoetballPrimeur.nl , van Persie said: "What I always try is to look at the position of central defenders in the game for the first 15 minutes. That opening phase is never crucial for a striker. I watched how they reacted if I let myself fall back to midfield, or if I came from the back of that Argentinian boy [Lisandro Magallán].

"That worked out that afternoon. Everything coincided. Duels with De Ligt, I don't start that. That makes no sense. He's so good, so strong.

"I have largely missed Ajax against Juve, but I have seen Spurs against City. That was better than a fantastic film. Ajax is now favourites, because Spurs plays without [Harry] Kane."
