John Hartson has said that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang should have been given the captain's armband at Arsenal, not Granit Xhaka.
The Swiss international has come in for criticism this season after a number of high profile mistakes have put his team under pressure - most notably in the north London derby against Tottenham.
Xhaka has held the armband since the start of the season, but was only officially named as skipper last week when Unai Emery took the unorthodox step of naming five captains.
Alongside Xhaka, he named Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Hector Bellerin and Mesut Ozil.
Speaking on BT Sport, Hartson said that it was wrong to make Xhaka the first choice skipper, with his choice being Arsenal's star striker.
Asked who he would choose, Hartson said: “Aubameyang for me. I think he leads by example, leads the line, fantastic attitude.
“[Alan] Shearer was a great captain, Harry Kane ’s not doing too badly as a captain.
“So I would give it to Aubameyang.”
While Karen Carney agreed that Granit Xhaka should not be captain, she actually went one step further on her assessment of the situation.
She said: "I wouldn’t have picked any, I don’t think there is any captain material in that team.
“No one, not for me.”
Carney's view was echoed by Steve Sidwell who described Granit Xhaka as 'a liability'.
He said: "Nobody stands out.
“Xhaka, he’s a liability. Look at some of the fouls he does.
“You need your captain to be strong, well you need him to be on the pitch first of all for 90 minutes.”
