Former Arsenal striker delivers scathing Willian verdict as he sends Gabriel Martinelli message

It has not been a good season so far for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal.

Defeat to Everton at Goodison Park was the Gunners' eighth defeat in 14 Premier League games so far this season, with Arsenal languishing down in 15th after their worst start to a top flight campaign in 46 years.

With each defeat, the pressure increases on Arteta as the Spaniard struggles to turn around Arsenal's season.

But while Arteta has faced criticism for the recent results, some of the more experienced Arsenal players have faced scrutiny over their performances in recent weeks.

One of those is Willian, who has failed to impress since his summer switch from Chelsea, having joined the Gunners on a free transfer after seven successful seasons in west London.

And former Arsenal striker John Hartson has delivered his verdict on the 32-year-old Brazilian and Arsenal's season so far, with the Welshman scathing in his criticism of the former Chelsea star.

“When he [Arteta] first came in he was like a breath of fresh air, he won two trophies," Hartson said, speaking to Talksport after the 2-1 defeat to Everton.

“The team he picked against Everton should have been enough to go and get goals.

“They are languishing in 15 th place and it is nowhere near good enough.

“Arsenal got Willian on a free, he decided to come across London and he has just not done it. These players are living off their past.

“He was great at times at Chelsea, but he has done absolutely nothing at Arsenal, he has been poor.”

One positive for Arsenal in the defeat at Goodison Park was the return from injury of Gabriel Martinelli, who made his first appearance of the season as he came off the bench in the second half.

But Hartson has delivered a strong warning about the Brazilian teenager, who impressed last season after joining Arsenal.

“You can’t be relying on Martinelli, he is a young boy," he said.

“He burst onto the scene, but if we are talking about him making the difference, he should be coming in alongside these new signings.

“It is a bonus to have him back, but you can’t expect him to make everything ok. It doesn’t happen like that.”
