Former Arsenal star urges Mikel Arteta to prioritise Europa League win over top four race

Former Arsenal striker John Hartson believes that the Gunners should be prioritising winning the UEFA Europa League this season.

The Gunners face Greek giants Olympiacos in the second-leg of their last-32 clash at the Emirates Stadium holding a one-goal lead after last week's first-leg.

Arsenal, of course, face an uphill challenge to try and secure a Champions League return via the Premier League this year, meaning their best hope of securing a return to the Champions League next season would be via winning the Europa League, which they finished as runners-up in to Chelsea last season.

With the Gunners in with an opportunity of lifting the trophy Gdansk at the end of May, Hartson, who played for the club between 1995 and 1997, believes the club should be giving it their all to make it to the final.

Arteta believes Aubameyang doesn't need titles to be considered world-class

"I do, yes," said Hartson when asked by BT Sport if Arsenal should make winning the Europa League their priority.

"I do feel that they have an outside chance of finishing in that fifth spot [in the Premier League].

"But if you look at the teams they are up against, in terms of Manchester United, Chelsea, Spurs, Wolves and Sheffield United... there are four or five teams chasing that fifth spot.

"I think last season when they got to the final of the Europa League the fans enjoyed it; they had supported their club all the way to a European final.

"I do believe now, of course winning this tournament gives you that Champions League spot, and I really do think Arteta will be saying 'look, let's do what we did last season and get to the final again.'

"It won't be easy, of course, because there are still some fantastic teams left in the competition."
