Former Arsenal star Paul Merson delivers brutal assessment of Tottenham 'success'

As a former Arsenal player, Paul Merson certainly understands the rivalry between the Gunners and their north London rivals Tottenham better than most people.

Even more so, the ex-England international knows that Arsenal fans have been forced to grit their teeth and watch Tottenham overtake them to finish in the Champions League places of late.

In the current campaign, Mauricio Pochettino's side made their best-ever start to a Premier League season before Monday evening's narrow defeat to Manchester City at Wembley.

But despite their improvement in recent years, Spurs have not won a trophy since 2008.

So when Merson was given the opportunity to deliver his verdict on the club's recent history, the Sky Sports pundit simply couldn't resist aiming a jibe about their lack of silverware.

Asked by Soccer Saturday presenter Jeff Stelling if Spurs would have trouble hanging onto their star players because they may have reached the height of their success, Merson bluntly responded: "What success?"

Spurs last won a trophy a decade ago when they overcame Chelsea in the League Cup final in 2008. In that time, Arsenal have won the FA Cup and Community Shield three times.

Spurs have, however, finished above Arsenal in the Premier League table in each of the last two seasons.
