Former Arsenal star Martin Keown takes swipe at Man Utd as he questions Daniel James transfer decision

Former Arsenal man Martin Keown has taken a swipe at Manchester United - while praising Daniel James as their best player.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team went down to another defeat at the weekend, at St James' Park.

James started the game against the Magpies and was the best of a bad bunch as the Red Devils laboured once again under the Norwegian.

The Wales star has arguably been United's best player this season since his £18million arrival from Swansea City in the summer. Signed initially as one for the future, the 21-year-old has become a mainstay of the side after making an electric start to his Old Trafford career.

Heaping praise on James and taking a dig at United at the same time, Keown said on Match of the Day 2: "Daniel James must be thinking 'who have I signed for here?' He's their youngest player, but he's their best player."

James was much coveted last summer, with Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea all reportedly tracking him before he committed to United.

Leeds United were close to signing the winger in January, before Swansea pulled the plug on the deal at the last minute.

Despite their poor start to the season, James is in no doubt that he made the right move.

"I still don't believe I'm a Manchester United player, it's the stuff you dream of," he told BBC 5 Live .

"Even though I'm in the changing room and I know I am, you still have to pinch yourself every night that you can say you're a Manchester United player.

"To play here is an honour that I'll grasp every game. I've started better than I thought I would.

"This club is amazing. Coming out at the Theatre of Dreams is unbelievable.

"I'll always love it and never get used to the sound of the fans. I want to be at the club my whole career.

"When I see scarves or shirts, I think: 'Why have they got my name on? They could have Pogba or Rashford or Lingard.'

"When people ask for pictures, I'll think: 'You don't want one of me, you want one with them.'"
