Former Arsenal star Kanu not convinced Mikel Arteta is right man for the job

Former Arsenal striker Nwankwo Kanu is not convinced Mikel Arteta has the experience to turn around the Gunners' poor season.

Arteta is expected to be announced as Arsenal's new manager ahead of the Gunners' Premier League clash away to Everton on Saturday.

While Arteta has Arsenal in his veins having played for the club for five years, this will be his first job as a manager, after three-and-a-half years working under Pep Guardiola as Manchester City's assistant manager.

The 37-year-old has helped guide City to two Premier League titles, two EFL Cups and an FA Cup, and is highly rated as a coach.

Another name who was linked with Arsenal was Carlo Ancelotti, who is set to take over as Everton's new boss.

The 60-year-old Italian would have brought with him a wealth of experience including three Champions League triumphs and title wins in England, Italy, Germany and France.

With Arsenal having recorded just one win in 12 games and struggling in 10th place in the Premier League, former Nigeria international Kanu doubts whether Arteta is the right man to have an impact on a flailing campaign.

"I know every fan is disappointed with the games the club have been playing of late," Kanu told the News Agency of Nigeria.

"This is not the same Arsenal people used to know. But, all the same, we can still turn it around.

"It is clear that Arsenal are not where they are supposed to be, they have to change a lot of things and ensure that they return to the basics."

Kanu played for Arsenal during the club's best years under Arsene Wenger between 1999 and 2004, winning two Premier League titles and two FA Cups.

And he added: "We need a strong hand to bring back the glorious days of Arsenal."
