Former Arsenal star Jose Antonio Reyes dies in car crash aged 35

Former Arsenal and Spain footballer Jose Antonio Reyes has died in a car crash, aged 35.

His former club Sevilla confirmed the tragic news in a statement today.

Posting on Twitter, the club's official account said: "We couldn't be confirming worse news.

"Beloved Sevilla star José Antonio Reyes has died in a traffic collision. Rest in peace."

Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno, previously of Sevilla, posted an emotional tribute to his friend.

Moreno said: "Impossible. I can't believe it yet. So many moments together, so many laughs.

"Rest in peace brother. I love you. Always in my heart."

And former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez sent out a heartfelt tribute on Twitter.

Benitez said: "It is with great sadness that I have heard of the tragic death of José Antonio Reyes.

"All our thoughts and prayers at this sad time are with his family."

Reyes spent three seasons at Arsenal between 2004 and 2007 and also enjoyed spells with Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Espanyol.

He won 21 caps for Spain and was playing for Extremadura last term.

The Spaniard made his debut for Sevilla at the age of 16 after coming through the ranks before joining Arsenal in 2004.

He would later return to his boyhood club in 2012, winning the Europa League on three separate occasions.

Reyes also won the tournament twice at Atletico Madrid, making him the most-successful player in the history of the competition.
