Former Arsenal star criticises Manchester United following Newcastle draw

Former Arsenal and England midfielder Ray Parlour has criticised Manchester United following their 1-1 draw against Newcastle United at St James' Park on Monday evening.

After falling behind to Allan Saint-Maximin's excellent seventh minute opener, United were second best throughout the contest, with Newcastle, despite their lowly league position, dictating the game and carving out no shortage of opportunities to extend their lead.

However, their lack of composure in front of goal cost them dearly, with United, despite being second best, securing themselves a point with just under 20 minutes left on the clock, thanks to Edinson Cavani's second goal of the campaign.

Nevertheless, it was a drab showing from United, with passes going astray, creativity being in short supply and their overall control of the contest proving to be non-existent.

Having not played for more than two weeks because of Covid-19 issues within the squad, former Arsenal man Parlour has questioned the Reds' level of performance after being granted such an extensive period without a match at the busiest time of the season.

"They [Newcastle] will be very disappointed this morning that they dropped two points, really," Parlour told talkSPORT.

"Before the game, Newcastle's fans probably would have took a point against Manchester United, but after the game they will have been going: 'How did we not get three points there?'

"Cavani, again, came to the rescue. It was a really poor performance from Manchester United and they hadn't played for 16 days days."

Having had 16 days between their win at Norwich and their stalemate on Tyneside, United have barely any time to get ready for their next assignment, with Burnley set to visit Old Trafford on Thursday evening.

After facing the Clarets later this week, Ralf Rangnick's troops will then welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers to Old Trafford on Monday for their first game of 2022.
