Former Arsenal man names the one player Mauricio Pochettino must start vs Liverpool

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has insisted that Heung-Min Son must start for Tottenham against Liverpool, claiming he's just as important as Harry Kane.

The South Korean forward has made seven Premier League appearances for the club this season, scoring two goals in the process.

However, with the team under-performing, Son has found himself on the bench on occasions this term.

Mauricio Pochettino called on the versatile forward to rescue a point against Watford in their last league outing after a subdued performance before his introduction.

However, former Arsenal star Merson has insisted that Son must start at Anfield against Liverpool and has underlined just why he is so important to the Tottenham team.

"Heung-min Son has to start for Tottenham against Liverpool and should be one of the first names on the teamsheet every week," Merson told the Daily Star in his latest column.

"He scored twice in their 5-0 win over Red Star Belgrade and outside of Harry Kane, he’s their biggest goal threat so they’ve got stick with him at Anfield.

"I don’t understand why he doesn’t play every game. He had to come off the bench against Watford but they will need him against Liverpool.

Liverpool v Tottenham: Mauricio Pochettino press conference in full

Spurs don’t have a lot of pace in their team. But he’s got pace to burn. Without him, Spurs on the counter are not going to hurt you really.

"Harry Kane doesn’t really get away from people, Erik Lamela wants to do a trick, and Dele Alli is the not the player he once was. Son is the one.

I think he is energetic, enthusiastic and makes things happen. I find it extraordinary when he’s not playing. He never lets you down.

"He’s a must to play at Liverpool because he’s the only one who can really test their centre backs on the counter.

"Son is a goalscorer but he’s never going to win the Golden Boot. No chance. You have to be more selfish to do that. It’s very rare a player with ten assists wins it.

"He’s not the type to be disappointed when his team has won 4-0 but he hasn’t scored. Golden Boot winners are.

"Spurs don’t have a lot of goals in their team outside of Kane. Alli doesn’t get in the box as often any more. Christian Eriksen isn’t playing much. Lamela won’t get you 15 a season.

"Without Son, where do those other goals come from? When he’s not there, opposition teams think stop Kane, stop Spurs.

"This is a big game for Spurs because if they lose the gap to the top four will just get bigger and bigger and they can’t afford that.
