Former Arsenal hero explains why Unai Emery is 'not in a good position' ahead of Liverpool test

Former Arsenal hero Andrey Arshavin has opened up on Unai Emery's situation at the club and provided an alarming verdict.

Arshavin arrived at the Gunners back in 2009 and featured for the club until 2013, though he arguably didn't fulfil the potential that his talent had promised.

It was Arsene Wenger who brought the Russian to London from Zenit Saint Petersburg, with the 38-year-old explaining that the Frenchman's legacy still lingers on at Arsenal.

Arshavin, who was speaking to Sky Sports, was asked about Emery's position at the club after a fifth-place finish in the Premier League last season and explained why the Spaniard is 'not in a good position'.

"You have to understand it's difficult to replace a manager who had been in charge for over 20 years," Arshavin told Sky Sports.

"He's not in a good position. He is just building the team and he needs time. I hope he does well."

Unai Emery: We never want to play against Liverpool

Arsenal, however, have begun the new campaign in the right manner after wins over Newcastle United and Burnley.

Next up is a trip to Anfield and a meeting with table-toppers Liverpool, a clash which Arshavin remembers fondly.

The former star forward bagged four goals in a memorable 4-4 draw at Anfield during the 2008/09 season and he reflected on that remarkable night during his brief interview with Sky Sports.

"When I walked out on the pitch to warm up I remember thinking that we wouldn't be losing today," Arshavin added.

"That's the only thing I knew. Of course I could not have imagined I would score four goals."
