Former Arsenal chief 'dismayed' by Unai Emery's transfer decision

Arsenal's former head of recruitment Sven Mislintat was unhappy with Unai Emery's decision to sign Denis Suarez in January, according to reports.

The German joined the Gunners in November 2017 after a successful spell with Borussia Dortmund but left after just 14 months.

During his time with the Premier League club, Mislintat played a key role in bringing several big names to the Emirates including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Bernd Leno, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi.

However, The Sunday Times claims that Mislintat was 'dismayed' by Emery's decision to sign Suarez on loan from Barcelona during the January transfer window, with his departure coming shortly after.

According to the publication, the German was disappointed by the move because he wanted to give more opportunities to some of Arsenal's academy players who played in the same position, notably Joe Willock and Bukayo Saka.

Suarez's time with the Gunners was an unhappy one as he failed to make an impact in the short time he spent with Emery's squad.

The Spaniard, who has also played at Manchester City , Sevilla and Villarreal, made just six appearances for Arsenal and failed to provide any goals or assists.

He returned to the La Liga club early due to injury before completing a permanent move to Celta Vigo earlier this summer.

Meanwhile, Mislintat has since become Stuttgart's director of football following his departure from Arsenal in February.

During his time with the club, he was also part of three-man panel, alongside former chief executive Ivan Gazidis and sporting director Raul Sanllehi, that selected Emery as Arsene Wenger's replacement last summer.

However, his spell in north London came to an end amid reports that he had several disagreements with Sanllehi and had grown frustrated with the club's transfer policy.

Emery currently faces problems within his own squad, with Laurent Koscielny refusing to travel on Arsenal's pre-season tour of the US.

The 33-year-old defender has just one year left on his current contract and is thought to be pushing for a return to France, with Bordeaux, Rennes and Lyon all interested in the Frenchman.
