Former Arsenal and Crystal Palace defender Kenny Sansom 'ill in hospital', family confirm

Arsenal and England great Kenny Sansom is currently undergoing treatment in hospital, his family have confirmed.

Sansom, 61, who won 86 caps for his country and captained the Gunners, is ‘currently ill’ and being ‘well cared for’ with his condition not related to Covid-19.

"Kenny is currently ill in hospital," a post written via Sansom's official Twitter account read.

"He is being well cared for and does not have COVID-19. Kenny’s family and close friends kindly ask the media to respect his and their privacy, plus that of the healthcare workers treating Kenny."

No other details on Sansom's condition have been given, with reports on Friday night claiming he has suffered a serious head injury.

The south London-born defender began his career at Crystal Palace before heading to Highbury in 1980.

He wore the captain’s armband as the Gunners won the League Cup in 1987 before leaving the club for Newcastle a year later.

Sansom also played for Queens Park Rangers, Coventry, Everton, Brentford and Watford.

He was part of the England squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 1986 World Cup, making 86 appearances between 1979 and 1988 - making him the Three Lions’ second-most capped full-back after Ashley Cole.
