Former army doctor on £120k wage charged with fraud over flights between Scotland and London

A colonel who earned about £120,000 a year as one of the Army’s top doctors has been charged with fraud.

The allegations relate to flights taken by Lieutenant Colonel Chris Baird-Clarke between London and Scotland over the summer of last year.

He has since left the Army and works as an occupational health physician – but retains his title.

Baird-Clarke, 48, is due to face a court martial at Bulford in Wiltshire next year.

Until recently he was the head of Defence Occupational Medicine for the Army in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Baird-Clarke previously served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Germany, Canada and Ulster.

As an Army doctor of senior rank his minimum salary would have been £120,000 or so.

However, it is likely he earned more because of his qualifications.

An Army spokesperson said: “We can confirm an individual has been charged with fraud committed during his time in the Army.

“We have strict procedures to identify and stop such incidents and any evidence is immediately reported to the relevant authorities.

“While proceedings are ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
