Recovered alcoholic James Roberts has founded what is believed to be the world's first 'dry holiday' business at a resort in Tenerife.
The travel industry recruitment expert is one of the hundreds of people who took the opportunity to seek treatment for dependency while the world was shut down and his recent recovery has led to him launch the ‘dry holiday’ option.
James, from Cheshire, recognised his relationship with alcohol and work was unhealthy last May, reaching rock bottom to the point where he needed help. With support from his partner Tony, he entered into treatment at Manchester-based rehab facility Delamere Health.
“Treatment changed my life. Following a successful four-week programme at the facility, I attended a retreat in Tenerife with my partner and realised there was a gap in the market for sober holidays.”
James recognised that there wasn’t enough support for relatives and partners of those who are dependant on substances and he will soon be ready to welcome his first guests.
“My struggle with alcoholism and treatment, had a huge impact on my relationship - not just with Tony but also family, friends and business partners.
"During the retreat, I was the only person who had brought along my partner. To me, it was a no-brainer, I assumed everyone who was in recovery would want their partner with them?”
James, who has worked in travel for over 20 years, bought his first ‘dry’ venue in the Canary Island of Tenerife in December 2020, and the Dry Holidays business is run by the pair with friend Kelly. They have all been through struggles with addiction during their lives.
Martin Preston, founder of Delamere Health, where James’ began his recovery said “It’s a joy to hear that he and his partner are embarking on helping others and the emphasis on family support they have in mind is much needed and I am sure will be well received. “
While Tenerife might not be the first option for a dry holiday, James who has relocated to the resort, admits he had preconceived opinions that the area was just a party destination but says he was ‘totally wrong’ and is ‘living and breathing proof’ that it’s possible to remain sober while abroad.
James added: “There is a massive need for holidays which don’t focus just on alcohol. Those who are in recovery need to be able to go on holiday too and I’m aiming to provide an experience that is both relaxing and invigorating.”
