Former Airdrie, Clyde and Albion Rovers star announces retirement

Former Clyde and Albion Rovers midfielder Scott McLaughlin has decided to hand up his boots after two decades in the game.

The 36-year-old, who started his career at Hamilton Accies, has made close to 700 appearances over the years and says he now wishes to focus on other commitments.

McLaughlin announced his decision on social media this morning saying he's "loved every second" of his time in the game.

The journeyman's previous clubs also include Livingston, Ayr United, Airdrie, Greenock Morton, Queen of the South, Peterhead, Stenhousemuir and Lowland League outfit Caledonian Braves.

His final SPFL appearance came in March when he turned out for Stenny in a 0-0 draw at home to Queen's Park. Just days later the Covid-19 pandemic shut down football and McLaughlin was denied a proper farewell.

In May McLaughlin proved to be a viral hit, helping boost fitness and mental health during lockdown.

He posted 5K run times to social media to build his personal motivation to go out and take on a run, and it encourage fellow pros to take on his ‘Scotty 1K Challenge’, including the likes of Scotland cap Robert Snodgrass and Celtic defender Greg Taylor.
