Former agent weighs in on the Trent Williams holdout

There doesn’t seem to be an end in sight to the Trent Williams holdout for the Washington Redskins.

But there are some ideas to keep in mind making the rounds.

One comes via CBS Sports’ Joel Corry, a former agent who has done plenty of work for players, including in the holdout category.

He says a full-season holdout would prove Williams is serious, but could also be detrimental to Williams:

Washington would likely have Williams’ contract tolled for a full year under the extension provisions in paragraph 16 of the standard NFL player contract, which would mean his deal wouldn’t expire until after the 2021 season instead of the 2020 season.

Speculation remains rampant as to whether the divide between the Redskins and Williams is mostly about money or if the medical side of things remains an issue.

If Williams indeed sits out the whole season, he’d end up risking the team tolling his contract, meaning he’d hit free agency a season later than the current contract.

Should the Redskins flex that sort of leverage, Williams could be back eventually.
