A former member of the Australian Defence Force has been charged with firearm and explosive offences after heavily armed officers stormed his home south-west of Sydney.
Police raided two properties in Picton and arrested Michael Brown, 54, as the bomb squad seized dangerous chemicals that could be used to make explosives.
NSW Police received foreign intelligence from their Australian Federal Police counterparts, informing them that firearms and explosives had been imported into Sydney earlier this month.
Mr Brown, who allegedly has an extensive military background, was handcuffed at his unit on Argyle Street, while detectives secured another property on Wild Street in Picton.
During a search of both homes, police also found a rotary evaporator, heating mantle, and glassware, as well as liquids and acids, including fuming nitric acid.
A detonator charger and a firearm were also removed during the lengthy operation that blocked off surrounding areas as a precaution.
Counter-terrorism police are now assisting with the ongoing investigation, although authorities insist there is no immediate threat to public safety.
Mr Brown was charged with possessing an unauthorised prohibited firearm, and possess, supply or make explosives for an unlawful purpose.
Appearing via video link, Mr Brown made no application for bail when he faced Moss Vale Court this morning.
He will remain behind bars until his next court appearance on August 10.
Investigators are not ruling out further arrests.
