Former ACT Young Labor president accused of bullying made national secretary

A former president of ACT Young Labor, suspended after being found to have bullied a party member, has been made national secretary of Australian Young Labor.

Nick Douros resigned from then senator David Smith's office earlier this year after an internal party investigation upheld claims against him.

Mr Douros, along with Niall Cummins and Francis Claessens, was accused of bullying another member in a bid to get her to quit her role in the party's youth branch.

They were found to have called her a "rat" and promised to "bully the f*** out of her".

All three were ordered to attend mediation and respectful behaviour training and suspended from any party positions they held.

The dispute was part of ongoing factional power plays within the party, with the target of the group believed to have been changing factional alliance from the right to the left.

Mr Douros was president of ACT Young Labor at the time.

The complaint was made to ACT Labor and referred to an internal tribunal in August last year.

Mr Douros was elected secretary of Australian Young Labor on the weekend at the national conference, taking over from Gemma Paech.

Jason Byrne from South Australia who was elected president of Australian Young Labor, taking over from Liam O'Regan from Queensland.

The culture of ACT Young Labor was described as "broken" during annual conference in July.

Mr Douros and Australian Young Labor have been contacted for comment.
