Former accountant has launched her own social enterprise to educate people on money matters

A former accountant from Lanarkshire has set up her own social enterprise which aims to give people a better understanding of their finances.

Adele Prendergast set up Your Pay Your Way last year, with the vision of helping to create a Scotland where people have a sound knowledge of their personal finances and are equipped to make financial decisions with confidence.

Adele was an accountant for one of the Big Four global firms, and has been working in the financial education arena for several years.

Her initiative is the first of its kind in Scotland and all profits go towards offering reduced price sessions for the hardest to reach people across Scotland, ensuring they receive meaningful financial education and can understand their money.

Adele told Lanarkshire Live: "When the charity I was doing work for didn’t react to the pandemic, I felt we were leaving a huge gap for young people when they needed us most.

"It gave me time to think about whether the last year of secondary school was the best place to teach people about money. There are so many young people who don’t make it to S6 and this was an opportunity to change and adapt how people learn about money.

“Our program has been developed in such a way that we can use this with younger children and more mature adults.

"We’re seeing impact across multiple age groups and businesses are now taking up the opportunity to add an employee benefit for their early careers staff while supporting non-profit groups in their local area.

“We’re not financial advisors and we don’t have any affiliation with a financial institute or bank, so organisations are confident that what we offer is purely educational and won’t involve any hidden product sales.”
