Former A's minor leaguer Miguel Marte dies of coronavirus complications

Former Oakland Athletics minor league player Miguel Marte has died from complications related to the coronavirus, the team announced Friday.

Marte, 30, played first base, catcher and right field in the A's minor league system from 2008-2012. He played three seasons in the Dominican Summer League, two in the Arizona Fall League and eventually rose to short-season Single-A with the Vermont Lake Monsters in 2012.

The A's announced the news on Twitter, saying their thoughts and prayers were with those close to Marte. They did not specify whether Marte was in the United States, his native Dominican Republic, or elsewhere when he died.

The MLB Players' Association also shared its condolences with the Marte family.

According to a GoFundMe link shared by the Athletics, Marte is survived by his wife and children. The fund aims to support them.

Marte hit .251 with 16 home runs over his minor league career with the Athletics, including a .230 average with three home runs at the Single-A level in 2012, his final year with the club.
