Former 98FM DJ Dara Quilty opens up on heartbreak after death of mum Roisin

Former 98FM DJ Dara Quilty has opened up about the death of his mother, Roisin, saying she had decided “enough was enough”.

The radio host was left heartbroken after his beloved mother passed away last August. The 57-year-old had been battling advanced metastatic breast cancer.

Speaking to Niall Breslin’s podcast Where Is My Mind?, Dara said his mother just had enough.

He said: “My mam was young. She got diagnosed when she was 45 years old. She went through horrendous treatment…. Then she came out the other side. Five years, you’re five years clear, they say. And I thought at the time ‘great, it’s over now’.

“Not realising the psychological effects. I was 21 when she got diagnosed and I wasn’t really clued in.”

Dara said he didn’t really know his mother’s death was coming.

“When my mam passed away, she did an advanced metastatic breast cancer. It got very bad April, May, June and she passed away in August. We didn’t know it was coming.

“She did it in her own way, which there is some comfort in. She passed away at home in her sleep. "She just decided enough is enough. She had radiotherapy that day and she was still receiving treatment but there was only a certain amount the body can take so she did pass away..”

Dara said since her passing he has cried more times than ever in his life.

“I’ve cried more times since the 4th of August than ever in my life. I was never a crier. I found it really difficult to cry, even throughout the illness, I found it really difficult to cry. I couldn’t cry. I just don’t. I don’t know why and then I have let it rip since August.”

“I never thought about the trauma of cancer,” as he spoke about the support services that are available to help like the Marie Keating Foundation.
