The last time the 49ers were in the Super Bowl, Vernon Davis was suiting up for San Francisco and pulled down six catches for 104 yards. Sunday, before their showdown with the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV, Davis announced his retirement in a skit on Fox.
Davis spent the last four seasons in Washington, and had his 2019 campaign cut to just four games due to a concussion that knocked him out for the season.
The 49ers’ first-round pick in the 2006 draft stumbled a bit out of the gate in his career. He had just 20 receptions for 265 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie, but he went on to a sterling career that included two trips to the Pro Bowl, one of the biggest catches in 49ers history, and a Super Bowl championship with the Broncos in 2015.
While Davis rose to the ranks of the NFL’s elite tight ends, his game-winning touchdown catch against the Saints in the 2012 divisional playoffs stands out among a career full of spectacular plays, and it’ll keep him in 49ers lore despite the fact he spent time in Denver and Washington.
Davis finished his career with 583 catches, 7,562 yards and 63 touchdowns.
