Former 49ers RB Alfred Morris schedules free agent visit with Saints

The New Orleans Saints are in the market for another piece in their backfield, with free agent Alfred Morris flying in for a visit per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Morris appeared in 12 games for the San Francisco 49ers last season after spending his first four years in Washington, and his next three with the Dallas Cowboys.

Morris is a very different type of back than former Detroit Lions passing-down specialist Theo Riddick, who the Saints met with on Sunday. Morris has logged just 65 receptions in his eight-year career, never catching a touchdown or averaging more than two catches per game in a season.

While he’s been a competent runner throughout his career, making gains at a clip of 4.3 yards per carry, Morris saw that number dip to just 3.9 yards per attempt last year. His best days are behind him, and he’ll be celebrating his 31st birthday in December. If the Saints sign him, it would be as competition for reserves Dwayne Washington and Devine Ozigbo, who figure to back up Latavius Murray as the Saints’ power-runner.

It’s worth noting that Javorius Allen, who the Saints signed back in May, missed his fourth consecutive training camp practice on Monday and has yet to make his debut in black and gold. If he’s dealing with an injury or ailment, the Saints haven’t said so yet.
