Former 49ers coach Jim Tomsula eying return to NFL

SANTA CLARA, Calif. _ Former 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula appears to have more than one opportunity to re-enter the NFL after a year away from the game.

The Sporting News reported Friday that Tomsula, 48, interviewed earlier this week for the New Orleans Saints' vacancy at defensive line coach. He also is a candidate for the same post in Washington, sources have told The Bee, especially if either Greg Manusky or Jason Tarver is tapped for defensive coordinator.

Tomsula spent eight seasons as the 49ers defensive line coach and worked alongside both Tarver and Manusky in that span. Tomsula was popular among the 49ers players, especially the defensive linemen, one of the reasons he was the surprise choice to replace Jim Harbaugh as head coach in 2015.

Tomsula went 5-11 before being fired after one season. He had job offers last year as well, but spent the year out of football in the state of Florida.

The 49ers still owe him the last two years on his four-year, $14 million contract. Whatever he would earn in a new NFL position would come off the top of what the 49ers still owe him.

The Sporting News also reported that Tomsula's offensive coordinator in San Francisco, Geep Chryst, will be hired as the Broncos tight ends coach.
