Former 19th century Gateshead pub could be turned into flats as council set to approve plans

A former 19th century Felling pub could be transformed into apartments as plans are set to be given the go-ahead next week.

Capstone Fox is behind proposals to turn the former Beeswing Hotel into 12 apartments – 10 of which would be one-bedroom homes, while two would be two-bedroom homes.

Planning documents submitted to Gateshead Council stated that there have been pubs on the Gosforth Street site since the 1850s, with the current building erected at the end of the century.

A report from the council’s planning department said that despite its age the building is of “limited” significance.

It said: “The Heritage Statement concludes that the building retains areas of significance, but overall the value of the building lies with the exterior and that internally significance is relatively low. Council officers agree in that the building significance is limited to local significance.”

Currently the property is being used for residential purposes with one floor being occupied.

A document said: “More recently the building has been in residential use, but due to the large scale of the building, it is mainly the second floor that has been utilised.”

Gateshead Council’s planning committee is set to vote on the proposals at a meeting on Wednesday.
