Forgotten South American playmaker returns to Newcastle United and wants first-team chance

Newcastle United's squad has been boosted by the return of another body in the shape of Rodrigo Vilca.

The 22-year-old Peruvian playmaker has returned at his own request after a half-season loan at Doncaster Rovers ended after 13 appearances and two goals.

Vilca is wanted by Alianza Lima but is keen to remain on Tyneside and stake his claim at Benton amid the club's Covid crisis.

Sources close to the player have told Chronicle Live he is eager to stay in the UK and show what he can do - preferably in Newcastle colours.

Vilca, a cash signing from Deportivo Municipal, joined United in autumn 2020 but has only featured in the Under-23s in a black and white shirt.

The natural move from the club's loan manager Shola Ameobi would be to fix up another EFL loan deal to bolster his appearance tally.

But with the club short on players going into January, Vilca could come into consideration for the FA Cup clash against Cambridge United in round three.

His stint at Doncaster did not see him feature in the competition making him eligible for next weekend's encounter with the League One side.

After leaving Doncaster, Vilca took to Instagram to say: "Thank you for all the support you have shown me since the day I arrived.

"I have the best memories.

"I wish you the best for the rest of the season."
