Forgotten Liverpool star inadvertently drops hint over club's summer transfer plans

Liverpool's problem position has been centre-back this season.

The Reds lost Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip to injury, prompting Jurgen Klopp to get creative and play midfielders including Fabinho and Jordan Henderson in defence.

In January, Klopp signed Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke and sent Sepp van den Berg on loan to Preston, with Ben Davies making a permanent transfer in the opposite direction.

Liverpool have recently been linked with RB Leipzig star Ibrahima Konate, but Klopp is yet to reveal his plans to rebuild his defence when the summer transfer window opens.

One man who has perhaps inadvertently dropped a hint on the manager's plans is Van den Berg.

The defender was recently interviewed for Preston's matchday programme and appeared to suggest he'd be returning to the Championship club for at least another season.

"I will never forget the time I have had here and hopefully it will be next season as well, you never know," he said. "If I still live close by, if I stay at Liverpool, and if the fans are allowed back, I will come back as a fan next season. If I am not here playing."

Van den Berg's comments suggest that Liverpool will indeed sign Kabak on a permanent deal at the end of the season, otherwise they'll be a centre-back short.

Whether they break the bank and bring in Konate also, though, remains to be seen.

Kabak was thrown in the deep end in January when he was tasked with plugging the hole in Liverpool's defence after only a handful of training sessions with his new teammates.

But the Turkish defender has done a great job so far this season, and is very keen to continue his development at Anfield.
