Forgotten Liverpool debut hinted at what was to come and what might have been

It is three years to the day since Mohamed Salah made his first appearance for Liverpool.

Admittedly, it was in a friendly against Wigan Athletic, but it was still the first chance Jurgen Klopp had to see the Egyptian in a match scenario.

No-one could have predicted the sheer volume of goals and assists he would produce over the next three seasons - but there were certainly signs that night.

Salah played the whole of  the first-half and scored before being substituted as Klopp rang the changes in a 1-1 draw. It was also the first opportunity for Salah to link up with Roberto Firmino.

The duo were involved in a number of intricate passing moves which have since become a trademark of Klopp and his attacking style of play.

Firmino played the pass to Salah to score what was his first goal for the club and he did the same a month later in the Premier League opener against Watford in the Egyptian’s first competitive appearance for the Reds.

The match against Wigan also gave Liverpool fans a chance to see, in hindsight, what could have been at Anfield.

Salah formed an immediate connection with Firmino but also exchanged a number of key passes and moves with Philippe Coutinho.

The Brazilian left Anfield a few months into Salah’s debut season on Merseyside and while it was a move that upset a large number of fans, no-one can complain with the results on the pitch since Coutinho’s departure.

The arrivals of Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker and Fabinho have transformed the Reds into a trophy and title-winning team, with the money for Coutinho’s transfer playing a big part.

While the results since Coutinho’s departure have been historic, there will always be those who wonder what could have been had the Brazilian remained at Anfield and formed a partnership with Salah.

We will never know, but triumphs in the Premier League and the Champions League will make that thought a lot easier.

Oh, and the 94 goals and 37 assists registered by Salah in all competitions too.
