Forgotten faces could get final chance as Manchester United prepare for pre-season debut

Mount debut

A year ago, it was Christian Eriksen who made his Manchester United debut in a pre-season match at the Ullevaal Stadion. This time, it could be the turn of another midfield addition to steal the show.

Mason Mount doesn't seem to have stopped smiling in his first week at the club, but he will be judged by what he does on the pitch rather than how positively he talks away from it.

Performances in pre-season certainly won't dictate the success of his signing, though these upcoming matches could well indicate how he'll be used next season and who he will be ahead in the pecking order.

Erik ten Hag has a pretty successful hit-rate with permanent additions since he took charge of the club and today we might get the first idea of just how good Mount could be.

Youngsters involved

One of the most exciting aspects of pre-season is the chance to see young players involved and United's illustrious academy could be on shown against Leeds today.

Zidane Iqbal's success on the tour last summer is evidence that even shining in the off-season is not enough to guarantee a transition into the senior set-up and serves as a brutal reminder of how good any young hopeful must be.

United's trio of returning Championship loanees in the shape of Amad, Alvaro Fernandez and Hannibal Mejbri look best set to take advantage of any opportunities that come their way. Hopes are also high for Kobbie Mainoo and the home crowd will be hoping Norwegian youngster Isak Hansen-Aarøen has an opportunity to shine.

If they get given a chance, they must take it. Even then it might not be enough.

Tactical tweaks

The very best managers continuously look to revolutionise the way their side play football and it will be fascinating to see if Ten Hag tries anything differently this summer.

Sometimes these tactical tweaks are meticulously-planned masterstrokes from the manager, while in other instances they are simply ways to adapt amid to unforeseen circumstances such as injuries or suspensions.

With so many senior players set to miss the Oslo opener it will be interesting to see if the United manager has any tricks up his sleeve to change the way his side play.

United have some solid foundations in place from last season, now they must build upon them.

Forgotten faces

Another key feature of the pre-season schedule is that it can give a few forgotten faces a chance to remind their manager of what they can offer.

It might not be enough for the likes of Brandon Williams to force their way back into the first-team frame, but the least they can do is try, and in Donny van de Beek's case it's even more difficult as he continues to work on a personalised programme to get back to fitness, missing this week's trip.

David de Gea's departure is not even enough to offer encouragement to those back-up goalkeepers, with Dean Henderson (also missing from the Oslo squad) and Tom Heaton both aware that no matter how well they perform the plan is to bring another to the club.

Martinez to feature

Lisandro Martinez watched on from the sidelines as United lost the FA Cup final to Man City last time out. They still might not have won with him on the pitch, but many believe they would have had a better chance.

The Argentine returned to Carrington last week ready to resume training with his teammates and was pictured taking part in drills with his teammates on Monday.

It might be an unnecessary risk to put him back into action ahead of the US tour and it will be fascinating to see whether he plays any part against Leeds today.
