Forgotten Chelsea striker urged to follow Romelu Lukaku example amid Blues exile

Forgotten Chelsea striker Michy Matshuayi has been urged to follow the lead of Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne.

Batshuayi has never quite managed to settle at Chelsea since his £35.1m transfer from Marseille in 2016, only racking up 48 Premier League appearances since and only managing eight goals.

Instead, the Belgian has spent much of his time out on loan, and he is currently with Crystal Palace on a season-long loan deal, his fourth since arriving at Chelsea and his second spell at Selhurst Park.

The Eagles are believed to have an option to buy should they wish to keep Batshuayi beyond this season, and former Belgian striker Erwin Vandenbergh has hinted Batshuayi should strongly consider leaving Stamford Bridge for good.

“In principle that would not be a bad choice for Michy," he said when asked about a possible departure for the striker by Voetbalkrant.

“Romelu Lukaku also dared to leave Chelsea for West Bromwich and later Everton. If he hadn’t, he might not have been where he is now.

“We also saw the same with Kevin De Bruyne.

“Batshuayi has been in the Premier League for several seasons now and it doesn’t work. So it wouldn’t be a problem to take a step back.”

Batshuayi has scored once in 18 appearances for Crystal Palace this season, struggling for goals and failing to repeat the form he showed during his first loan spell on loan with the Eagles when he scored five in 11 appearances.

The 27-year-old scored 29 in 62 league appearances at Marseille to earn his move to Stamford Bridge but it seems, having failed to impress at Chelsea, an exit is now inevitable.

Batshuayi has only one year left on his current contract after this summer, meaning Chelsea will almost certainly look to sell to avoid losing all of the £35.1million they spent five years ago.
