Forgotten Chelsea midfielder provides injury update on social media

Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel has provided a fitness update as he steps up his recovery from long term injury.

The 26-year-old has been out of action for almost 18 months after undergoing surgery for a Cruciate injury during the summer of 2018, an injury that put a possible permanent move to Dutch side PSV out of question.

The Dutchman has made just four first team appearances for Chelsea since joining the club from Vitesse Arnhem in 2013, and has had his time at Stamford Bridge blighted by injuries.

Van Ginkel has been sent out on various loan spells to AC Milan, Stoke City and PSV, where the midfielder wore the captain's armband for the majority of the 2017/18 season.

The player has suffered setbacks in his recovery, with the original timescale of eight months coming and going. But, he has now taken to Instagram to provide an injury update.

"After more than a year, finally back on the pitch," he wrote.

"For most players it is normal to be training outside, but I had some setbacks during my recovery which was really frustrating. I am working hard everyday, not there yet but it is getting closer now."

He posted the message alongside a picture of him at Cobham and a video of him running outside.

There has been no date put on his potential return to Chelsea's first team, but the player is one step closer to getting back out on the pitch.
