Forgotten Chelsea midfielder left in dark over future after making trip home

Marco van Ginkel is still in the dark over whether he will receive a new Chelsea contract but the Dutch midfielder has revealed that he is nearing fitness following almost two years out with a knee injury.

The 27-year-old has not played since May 2018, when he guided PSV to the Eredivisie on loan, before requiring an operation on his anterior cruciate ligament later that summer.

Since then he has suffered a series of setbacks to delay his return and has lost count of the number of surgeries required.

He is out of contract on June 30 and said there has been no offer of a new deal from the Blues, who also have Willian, Pedro, Olivier Giroud and Willy Caballero.

Van Ginkel, who joined Chelsea from Vitesse Arnhem in July 2013, was last week given permission to return home to the Netherlands to be with family during the coronavirus lockdown and is back running at near full tilt.

“I have no idea what is going to happen. Chelsea should let me know what it plans to do next month. I’ll call them in a few weeks," he told Voetbal International when asked about his future.

“No, seriously, I don’t know. Due to the current crisis, it may just be that a lot is changing in terms of contracts and salaries in football. These are uncertain times for many people. We’ll just wait and see.

"They can also think; we have invested a lot in that boy and now he is finally fit. Let’s keep him.”

The club have held talks with Willian over a new deal but have hit a roadblock, while Giroud said he would be tempted to stay. Pedro has been linked with a move to MLS and Caballero's intentions remain unclear.
