Forgotten album at Dumfries and Galloway museum becomes inspiration for young writers

A forgotten album of old photographs in the objects store at the Devil’s Porridge Museum in Eastriggs has become an inspiration for young writers.

The museum’s modern apprentice, Desray Coward, came across the battered album and was intrigued by the pictures and the stories they conjured up.

So she encouraged the museum to use them as the base for a creative writing course for young people last week which was run by local author, Kerrie McKinnell.

The early 20th century black-and-white holiday photos from the family photo album in the museum’s collection proved a perfect muse and the children let their imaginations run and the words flow.

Desray said: “It was great to see the stories that the young people came up with using the photographs from the museum’s collection.

“It’s particularly good because there’s not much we know about the photo album or the people in it, so it was great to give the photos new ‘imagined’ stories.

“All the stories were entirely different from each other too, including stories about a widow, the ship’s captain, a young doctor, someone who got called to court and more.

“Thanks to Kerrie McKinnell for running the workshop and the young people involved for sharing the fantastic stories they created.”

The workshop has also earned praise from museum manager, Judith Hewitt, who said: “We are so pleased to have been able to put Desray’s great idea into action. Her apprenticeship is going really well and we look forward to seeing what she comes up with next.”

The museum has more events coming up over the summer which can be seen on their website, Facebook and Eventbrite pages.
