Forget standing desks: the next thing is lying down to work

You probably already know someone who stands at their desk.

The health benefits of getting out of the office chair are well known. Studies have shown that spending half the day upright reduces the risk of heart attack and cancer. Advocates say it’s the best way to battle the stiff neck and sore back that comes with sitting down all day.

But there might be another way. A US company has come up with a reclining chair that allows the user to lie down and work.

This dentist’s chair for your daily grind comes with head-support and a swivelling desk attached. It’s been designed by Altwork to cover all the bases between standing and lying down – from gently reclining to working flat on your back.

Altwork say they have received more than a million in funding and have worked on several prototypes to come up with the retail model. It comes with room for two screens and a keyboard and uses magnets to keep the mouse and mousepad from falling when upside down.

Lying down on the job comes with a price. Altwork’s early adopters can get their hands on the technology for $3,900, but the product will retail at $5,900.
