Forget regular spas - you can swim in thermal springs on the side of a mountain

Spa seekers who also love a bit of adventure might want to bookmark a trip to Mexico's spectacular Grutas de Tolantongo.

That's because, tucked away amidst the side of a mountain, you'll find heaps of lush, terraced thermal springs in which you can have a dip.

Thanks to their quirky location, the springs also offer some glorious views of the surrounding landscape from the dense green forests to ethereal waterfalls.

Oh, and the sunsets make for a pretty beautiful backdrop.

But that's not all that's on offer.

Visitors who head to the Tolantongo Caves will find plenty of fascinating grottoes and tunnels to explore, waterfalls to be admired, and plenty more pools (including some on the ground for those who don't fancy the mountain springs).

The springs are actually part of The Grutas Tolantongo water park, so if you want to visit you'll need to pay for a day ticket which costs $150 MXN pesos per person - that's approximately £6 each.

Still, that gains you access to all of the pools, rivers, waterfalls and more from 7am until 8pm. The resort also offers a restaurant if you're feeling peckish amidst all of the relaxation.

If you're feeling particularly adventurous you could also take on the zip line.

The park sits about four hours north of Mexico City if you're travelling by car, but if you don't fancy making the trek for a day there are some in-resort hotels. You can find out more about the hotels on the resort's official website as well as general tips if you're planning a visit to the springs.
