The next Chelsea manager predicted by Football Manager 2019 - and it is not Frank Lampard

Chelsea are on the lookout for a new manager, after Maurizio Sarri left the Blues to join Juventus.

The Italian's return to his native country was confirmed by Chelsea earlier today (Sunday), with Sarri leaving west London after one season in charge, having guided the Blues to third in the Premier League and success in the Europa League.

But he has now signed a three-year deal with Serie A champions Juventus, leaving the Blues to search for a new manager.

Former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard is the current favourite to succeed Sarri at Stamford Bridge, but who is the most likely candidate to take over from Sarri?

We used highly respected football management simulation game Football Manager 2019 to find out.

Chelsea's next manager

To get a prediction for Chelsea's next manager, we started up a new game, with all the latest updates and results from last season (courtesy of a fan made editor file) and then moved Sarri from Chelsea to Juventus in game on July 1 2019.

This then put Chelsea in a difficult position and they started scrambling for a new manager, with the likes of Lampard, Eusebio Di Francesco and Eddie Howe linked with the role in game, but none of them passed the interview stage.

Here is who Chelsea turned to at the start of the 2019/20 season.

The Blues appointed Galatasaray manager Fatih Terim to replace Sarri at the start of the 2019/20 season.

According to Football Manager 2019, Terim's main strengths are his man-management, motivating, determination, level of discipline, judging player ability and tactical knowledge.

The 65-year-old's coaching skills aren't as strong as Sarri, as he focuses mainly on the mental side of the game.

The game says that Terim's playing philosophy is an attacking one, with an urgent pressing style and he likes to line up in a 4-1-4-1 formation.

Here are his managerial tendencies:

  • Make early tactical changes
  • Use zonal marking for set pieces
  • Use counter-attacks
  • Looks for overlap
  • Works the ball into the box
  • Plays out of defence
  • Uses intense pressing

Here are his managerial non-tendencies:

  • (Doesn't) use non-first team goalkeeper for continental cup games
  • (Doesn't) sit back and protect a lead
  • (Doesn't) look for underlap

According to Football Manager 2019, Terim is the club's next best choice as Chelsea manager.
