Forget Bali Or Euro Summer This Australian Road Trip Is the Ultimate Holiday

Forget Bali Or Euro Summer This Australian Road Trip Is the Ultimate Holiday

If your idea of a road trip caps out at Byron or the Great Ocean Road, it’s time for a very gentle but very firm intervention. Because while you’ve been busy fighting for parking spots at the beach and pretending you’re okay with the crowds on your holiday, Far North Queensland has been sitting there like, “hey… I exist?”

Far North Queensland is full of sparkling turquoise water, lush rainforests and restaurants that rival any hatted eatery in Sydney. If you haven’t road-tripped there yet, you’re not just missing out, but you’re actively skipping Australia’s best kept secret.

So, let us save you from any further bad travel decisions and share the ultimate road trip itinerary for your adventure up north.

How we avoided airport car hire trauma in FNQ

When it comes to road-tripping, hiring a car from Turo makes sense. Instead of settling for whatever mystery hatchback the airport counter hands you, Turo lets you pick the exact car that fits your trip. Whether that’s a zippy car for coastal cruising or a proper SUV built for rainforest detours and waterfall missions.

It’s flexible, often better value, and we’re happy to see that car hire has finally caught up with the modern world. The whole thing runs through the app. So all your booking details, pick-up info and messages with the host live in one place. When we picked up our car with Turo in FNQ, the whole process was refreshingly painless. There were clear instructions and no awkward counter queues or paperwork drama. For your road trip, this means less time stressing over logistics, more time focusing on the good part AKA the road trip ahead.

The FNQ stops you actually need to pull over for

Palm Cove
Palm Cove is FNQ as a postcard. Think palm-lined walks, barefoot coffees and a vibe that gently suggests you stop checking your phone. It’s close enough to Cairns to be an easy drive, but far enough away to feel like a proper escape.

Palm Field
Palm Field is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it stretch of perfectly lined palms that somehow demands a stop. Sitting just off the Captain Cook Highway, it’s a classic FNQ road trip moment and ideal for a spontaneous photo break before getting back on the road.

Rex Lookout
Perched high above the Coral Sea, this coastal lookout is one of those stops that instantly justifies the entire drive. The views stretch endlessly along the shoreline, making it almost impossible not to pull over for a quick photo (or five).

Kulki Lookout
Cape Tribulation is Far North Queensland showing off. It’s where the rainforest starts tumbling straight into the ocean, and when you’re on the road you absolutely have to stop to see it. Kulki Lookout is the quick and easy way to take it all in, and yes, it really is that impressive.

FNQ accommodation picks you won’t be able to stop talking about

Pullman Port Douglas Sea Temple Resort & Spa
Let’s be clear: if pools are a priority (and in FNQ they absolutely are), Sea Temple is doing the most. The lagoon pool sprawls around the entire resort and is both wildly aesthetic and perfect for losing entire afternoons. The rooms back it up too, with spacious fit-outs opening onto the lagoon or your own private plunge pool.

Set just out of town, it strikes the balance between easy access and peaceful retreat. This means gelato runs are still on the cards, but switching off completely is very much encouraged. Add spa sessions and cocktails by the water, and you’ve got an FNQ stay that might make you question next year’s Euro Summer.

Pullman Cairns International
If Cairns is your launchpad for reef trips, rainforest missions and early starts, Pullman Cairns International is a very solid base. You get all the holiday perks with a generous pool deck, rooms that feel properly grown-up and incredibly comfy, plus a central location near the Esplanade for easy departures to the reef. Add a decent bar for when you get back, and you’ve got convenience without sacrificing the “I’m on holidays” feeling.

The FNQ experiences that actually live up to the hype

Mossman Gorge
Mossman Gorge is your reminder to slow down and actually enjoy where you are. Set deep in the rainforest, it’s packed with cool swimming holes, smooth boulders and water so clear it barely looks real.

The Rainforest Circuit Track
A gentle loop through dense rainforest that lets you experience the Daintree without committing to a full-on hike. Calm, cool and grounding, plus absolutely ideal before or after a swim.

Daintree Ferry Crossing
Crossing the Daintree on a ferry is where the road trip officially levels up. If you’ve never been on a car ferry before, let this be your sign to do it! Once you’re across the Daintree, the rainforest gets thicker, the roads quieter, and it genuinely feels like you’ve entered a different part of Far North Queensland. If you’ve got Cape Tribualtion on your list, you’ll need to cross on the ferry to get there.

Reef Magic Pontoon
If you’re in Cairns, the reef is a non-negotiable stop. Reef Magic Pontoon makes it easy, with snorkelling, diving and crystal-clear water on the outer reef. The pontoon works with Citizens of the Reef, a non-profit that uses science, technology and community action to help protect and restore the magnificent Great Barrier Reef. You can be part of conservation in action while you’re there by helping attach coral pieces to structures that will go back into the reef and learn about the work being done to preserve the natural wonder.

Babinda Boulders
This feels like one of Far North Queensland’s best-kept secrets. Tucked deep in the rainforest, it has fast-flowing water and swimming spots that look almost unreal. Just make sure you stick to the designated swimming areas because this place is as powerful as it is beautiful.

Because you can’t road trip FNQ on snacks alone: the best food in FNQ

Vivo Palm Cove
Vivo Palm Cove nails that sweet spot between polished and laid-back. Right on the water (literally), it’s ideal for a breezy lunch, sunset drinks or an easy dinner. If you’re hot and after something refreshing don’t miss the house-made lemonade. (Thank us later).

ALUCO
ALUCO is a more refined take on dining in Port Douglas without losing the relaxed holiday vibe. It’s modern, intimate and ideal for a slower, considered dinner when you feel like doing something a little special.

Nautilus
This is an amazing Port Douglas restaurant for when you want dinner to feel like an experience and not just a booking. It’s set in a open-air rainforest garden (yes, you read that right) and the food is just as beautiful as the setting. If you want something special when you’re up north, this is not to be missed.

Coco’s Kitchen + Bar
Coco’s is a Cairns crowd-pleaser. It’s relaxed, lively and ideal for nights when the plan is simply good food and a good time. Come for a drink, order “just one thing,” and suddenly you’re staying for dinner. Very on brand for a FNQ night out.

BYO Picnic
Sometimes the best meal on a Far North Queensland road trip is the one you bring yourself. Grab something fresh, pull over somewhere scenic, and suddenly lunch comes with rainforest backdrops, ocean views or a shady spot you’ll wish you’d found earlier.

Far North Queensland has a way of resetting your travel expectations. It’s less about strict itineraries and more about slow drives, spontaneous stops and plans that happily fall apart. Take your time, lean into it, and don’t be surprised if you leave already plotting your return.
