'Forever loved': Flowers left in tribute to teenager who died during police pursuit in Spennymoor

Flowers, balloons and messages of love have been left near the scene of a crash in Spennymoor where a teenager lost his life.

The crash happened shortly after police officers began a pursuit of a Nissan Primera in the County Durham town on Friday afternoon.

The 19-year-old old driver of the Nissan crashed the car on Central Drive, Middlestone Moor and suffered fatal injuries.

Family and friends of the teenager, who has not yet been identified by police, have now left tributes to the man close to where he died.

Heart and star-shaped balloons were tied to a fence on Central Drive along with a number of floral bouquets.

The street was cordoned off on Friday afternoon as forensics officers carried out an investigation, with dozens of officers lining the streets.

Paramedics were called to the scene and the air ambulance was dispatched, but nothing could be done to save the man's life.

Due to the police pursuit, the crash has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) which is investigating the involvement of the police.

David Ford, who is Interim Regional Director of IOPC, said: "We understand that shortly after 2.30pm a Durham Constabulary marked police car followed a Nissan Primera.

"After the pursuit the vehicle crashed on Central Drive, Middlestone Moor.

"The 19 year-old man driving the Nissan was fatally injured during the incident.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family and friends and anyone affected by this sad incident."

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash has been asked to contact the IOPC at 0800 096 9076 or email witness@policeconduct.gov.uk.
