Forensics called to Doctor Duncan's pub after thief's booze haul

Forensics were called after a heartless thief smashed his way into one of Liverpool's best known pubs.

CCTV is now being probed after the man helped himself to spirits and a charity collection box raising funds to support people suffering with mental health difficulties.

Pictures taken by the ECHO's Andy Teebay show a huge whole in a window and police at the scene after the break-in at much loved Dr Duncan’s in St John's Lane whose building dates back to 1901.

Forensics officers were also drafted in after police were called just before 6am today.

Confirming they were probing the break-in a police spokeswoman said: "We are appealing for information after a burglary at Dr Duncan’s in the early hours of Thursday, January 9.

"A report was received after an alarm was activated at the premises on St John’s Lane at 5.50am when an offender forced entry through a side window."

Merseyside Police confirmed a charity box and "a quantity of alcohol" was stolen and a forensic examination of the scene has taken place,

Enquiries have been ongoing including CCTV investigations.

A spokesman for the pub said the window had been replaced and the pub was open as normal.

He said spirits and a charity box which he believed was for a local mental health charity were taken.

Inspector Lynsay Armbruster said: “We are keen to find the offender as any burglary is unacceptable and upsetting for the people involved.

“I would urge anyone with information to get in touch so that we can progress the investigation and bring the offender to justice.”

The pub is named after William Henry Duncan the UK’s first medical officer of health and features medical memorabilia.

The building itself was built for Pearl Insurance in 1901 .
