Forensic teams cordon off city centre graveyard after woman attacked

Police in Bristol have appealed for witnesses after a woman was attacked in a graveyard near the city centre in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Forensic teams spent much of Saturday combing the scene for evidence following the attack which took place at around 6.30am.

The area of the old graveyard and park behind Brunswick Square in St Paul’s was cordoned off by police at around 7am, and police said inquiries into the incident are still ongoing.

The area is behind the Unitarian Meeting Hall and Trelawney House, between Surrey Street and Wilder Street.

One local resident said she was shocked to see the police forensic teams.

“I noticed them at around 7.30am on Saturday and they were there until around 3pm on Saturday,” she said.

“One officer was guarding the entrance nearest to the Ethical Kitchen,” she added.

A police spokesperson said if anyone was in the area early on Saturday morning they should contact the police.

“We were carrying out a forensic examination of the area in connection with an assault during Saturday morning at about 6.30am,” he said.

“Police enquires into the incident are continuing. Anyone with any information is asked to contact us, quoting reference 5219194909,” he added.
