A popular curry restaurant has claimed that a foreigner who pocketed 10,000 and 20,000 baht after completing two food eating challenges was later found to have cheated.
The restaurant said he was later seen to have been stuffing rice in his bag or his pockets during the challenge.
Gold Curry Bangkok offers 20,000 baht for those who finish off an 8 kilogramme serving of curry rice within 45 minutes, with 10,000 baht for completing a smaller 6kg portion.
On Dec 12, the restaurant's Facebook page celebrated what seemed a legitimate victory, posting: "8kg completed! Finished with five minutes to spare out of 45 minutes, successfully claiming the 20,000 baht prize. Brilliant performance - full marks, 10 out of 10!"
He was also paid out for the smaller portion.
However, on Dec 18, Gold Curry Bangkok revealed the truth after watching CCTV footage: "The individual who conquered both the 6kg and 8kg portions achieved this through cheating. He secretly placed rice in his pockets. We alert other establishments running eating competitions to beware of this individual."
While staff normally oversee the competition, they missed it both times, the restaurant said.
The restaurant admitted that the man walked away with the money, all 30,000 baht, and had not returned.
