Foreign travel postponed 'indefinitely' as government issue coronavirus update

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office have told Brits to postpone all foreign travel "indefinitely" as the coronavirus outbreak continues.

The original advice was announced on Tuesday 17th March and initially applied for 30 days.

However the FCO is now extending this to 'indefinitely' as the global pandemic continues - reports Mirror Online.

This means that if you have a holiday booked, it's now effectively cancelled.

It's likely that your travel firm or airline will get in touch to discuss your options - this may include rebooking your trip for a later date.

A lot of travel firms have also been offering vouchers and credit. However if you want your money back, you are entitled to request a refund.

Travel firms have been prioritising those due to travel imminently - and many have been flooded with calls so if you are getting in touch, it may take various attempts before you get through.

In terms of what counts as essential travel, there isn't a specific destination.

The FCO does shed some light, explaining on its website: "Sometimes we say that only essential travel is advised. Whether travel is essential or not is your own decision.

"You may have urgent family or business commitments to attend to. Circumstances differ from person to person. Only you can make an informed decision based on the risks."

The news comes weeks after the UK went on lockdown, with people only allowed to leave home for four reasons.

These are; daily exercise, a medical need, to shop for food essentials and to travel to and from work if you're a key worker and your work can't be completed from home.
