Foreign-run e-bike tour firm busted on Koh Phangan

Tourists ride electric bikes on Koh Phangan in Surat Thani province in southern Thailand.

A German man and a Myanmar national have been arrested on Koh Phangan for illegally running a tour firm that rented electric motorcycles to tourists.

Tourist police arrested a 33-year-old German identified only as Roman, and Pyae Aung, 31, at noon on Monday in response to complaints about the high speed of the unregistered electric motorcycles they used to guide tourists on trips on the island.

The German said that he hired the Myanmar national as a tour guide for his company, which started business six months ago. The firm reportedly charged clients 2,000 baht per hour.

Police found that the company was based on nearby Koh Samui and had illegally opened a branch on Koh Phangan.

Tour guide service is a job reserved for Thais.
