Foreign Office issues warning for tourists over 'extreme risk' in Spanish tourist areas

The Foreign Office has warned those travelling to Spain that there is an "extreme risk" weather warning in place for tourists hotspots.

WalesOnline reports that Spain's meteorological office (AEMET) issued the warning for Teruel, Albacete, Murcia, Barcelona, Girona, Tarragona, Valencia, Alicante and Castellon.

Areas such as the Balearics, Almeria, Granada and Jaen are also on high alert.

High winds and snowfall are expected to cause road closures and disruption to transport services.

It follows a week where Spain has experienced heavy snowfall.

Rubén del Campo, a spokesperson for AEMET said: “The next few days will be marked by a strong winter storm – the most intense that we have seen over the years.”

He added Spain can expect to see heavy snowfall, icy cold temperatures, rain and a strong maritime storm.

BBC Weather’s Susan Powell has said: “The area of low pressure is likely to bring some very disruptive rain into the south of France.

“It will spread across the Pyrenees right the way down to eastern Spain in the days ahead.

“It is already in place on the latest satellite picture and the winds around it are going to cause some very choppy seas through the western end of the Mediterranean.

“It will also affect the Spanish Costas and the Balearics and even as far east as Sardinia and Corsica could see some snow, especially over the mountains of Corsica.

“There will be heavy snow likely over the mountains of eastern Spain and potentially some spots even getting cut off.”

Check the Spanish Civil Protection Unit (@proteccioncivil) for precautionary advice on the area you’re visiting and see information about the weather warning here.

If you’re in the area you should exercise caution and follow the advice of the local authorities.
