Foreign Office issues travel advice to Liverpool fans heading to Madrid for Champions League tie

Liverpool fans have been warned by the Foreign Office that they could face being arrested by Spanish police if they fail to carry their passports with them while in the country.

A huge number of Reds fans are expected to embark on the Spanish capital for their side’s Champions League tie with Atletico Madrid in two weeks time.

But under new guidelines, UK travellers are now legally required to present their ID if requested by a police officer, with a driver’s licence no longer accepted by the Spanish authorities.

Fans travelling to Spain for the clash should also be aware that they must provide ID if requested by a police officer.

The Spanish police now also have the right to hold any tourist at a police station until their identity is confirmed, while they can also accompany foreigners back to their accommodation and request to see the original document, if they deem it necessary.

“The police have the right to hold you at a police station until your identity is confirmed,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.

“Always take care of your passport, as obtaining a replacement is costly and time-consuming. Remember to keep a photocopy, or scanned copy, of your passport somewhere safe.”

Liverpool fans have also been reminded to keep a watchful eye on their possessions at airports, train stations and on public transport, to avoid having their bags snatched by pickpockets around the city.

Jurgen Klopp's side head to the Wanda Metropolitano on February 18, with the return leg set to take place at Anfield on March 11.
